CAMERA are a young Berlin-based street band, a trio notorious for guerilla-style impromptu concerts in public spaces in Berlin. CAMERA's debut album ''Radiate!'' was released in summer 2012, and the band fascinates audiences everywhere with their spontaneous music. The band consists of Michael DRUMMER (drums), Franz BARGMANN (guitar) and Timm BROCKMANN (keyboards). They have been attached with a ''Krautrock Guerilla'' epithet for their modern type of Krautrock the play, which, as reported, blends elements of NEU! and KRAFTWERK.
Man nennt sie „Krautrock-Guerilla“, sie traten bereits mit den KrautrockLegenden Michael Rother und Dieter Moebius auf und spielten schon beim Deutschen Filmpreis und der Echo-Verleihung. Und jetzt kommt auch noch das nicht für möglich gehaltene Debüt-Album. Kurzum: Bei dem Berliner Trio Camera ist einiges los in letzter Zeit. Aber der Reihe nach.
Beginnen wir mit einem Ritterschlag: Der kam zunächst von niemand
Geringerem als Michael Rother (NEU!, Harmonia), indem er mit Camera
gemeinsam diverse Auftritte absolvierte. Einen weiteren Beweis dafür, dass Camera mit ihrer Musik den genuinen Krautrock-Nerv getroffen haben, war dann ein gemeinsames Konzert mit Rother und dessen altem Mitstreiter Dieter Moebius (Cluster, Harmonia). Die Pioniere von vor 40 Jahren haben die Qualitäten von Camera erkannt und fördern und unterstützen sie. Und was hat es mit dem Stichwort „Krautrock-Guerilla“ auf sich? Nun, am liebsten spielen Camera Spontankonzerte im öffentlichen Raum, ohne Genehmigung, versteht sich. Wenn jemand das erste Mal Camera live sieht, dann meist nicht in einer Konzerthalle, sondern unerwartet und überraschend: mitten in der Nacht auf einem U-Bahnhof, in einer Fußgängerunterführung, in einer Herrentoilette. Die drei bauen ihr minimalistisches Schlagzeug (Snaredrum, Standtom, Becken, Schellenkranz) auf sowie zwei Verstärker, stöpseln die Gitarre und das Keyboard ein, und los geht’s. Das Publikum ist begeistert. Die Ordnungshüter sind es oft nicht ...

Eine andere Spezialität von Camera ist es, sich in hochoffizielle After-ShowPartys (Deutscher Filmpreis, Echo-Verleihung etc.) zu schummeln, ihr Equipment in wenigen Minuten aufzubauen und so lange zu spielen, bis die Security merkt, dass der Auftritt kein offizieller Programmpunkt ist. Auf der diesjährigen Echo-Verleihung haben sie tatsächlich auf dem Herrenklo gespielt. Auf diese Art und Weise treffen sie ganz unmittelbar auf ein unvoreingenommenes und unvorbereitetes Publikum, das immer sofort begeistert ist.
Tja, und nun steht die erste Veröffentlichung an. Ursprünglich hatten die
drei Musiker gar kein Interesse an Aufnahmen, sondern wollten nur spielen, spielen, spielen. Nach einer gewissen Zeit aber schälten sich in ihren improvisierten Auftritten immer mehr Formen und Strukturen heraus, die man zu Stücken machen konnte. Dann fehlte noch ein bisschen gutes Zureden, und sie waren bereit. Die nächste Überraschung war dann, dass es Camera tatsächlich gelang,
ihre Spontaneität ins Studio zu übertragen. Die Stücke wirken nie
konstruiert oder sonderlich arrangiert, sondern könnten auch genau so auf der Straße aufgenommen worden sein – abgesehen von der Klangqualität natürlich. Das liegt auch daran, dass die drei das Album tatsächlich "live" im Studio aufgenommen haben, und zwar mit exakt dem gleichen Equipment, mit denen sie ihre Guerilla-Auftritte absolvieren. Cameras musikalisches Spektrum reicht vom nach vorne preschenden Motorik-Rocker über massive und bedrohliche Klanggebirge bis hin zu ruhigen, episch dahin fließenden Stücken. Anders gesagt: Das geht zum einen voll in die Fresse und zum anderen in interstellare Sphären, wo Raum und Zeit keine Gültigkeit mehr haben; kosmische Musik! Ihre Vorbilder NEU!, Harmonia, Cluster und La Düsseldorf sind nicht zu überhören. Camera haben den Krautrock auf die Straße, direkt zu den Leuten gebracht und erschließen mit ihrer Guerilla-Taktik den Zauber deutscher Musikpionierleistungen breiteren Zuhörerschichten. Das ist wahrhaftig aller Ehren wert! Und nun, endlich, gibt es Camera auch für zu Hause.

And now, as unlikely as it may once have seemed, here it is, their
debut album. A lot has been going on with the three boys. One thing at
a time, however.
Let us start with an accolade: first proffered by no lesser figure than
Michael Rother (NEU!, Harmonia), who played a number of shows
together with the Camera boys. Further proof that Camera hit the
genuine Krautrock nerve with their music was a joint gig with Rother
and his old comrade Dieter Moebius (Cluster, Harmonia). The pioneers
of 40 years ago have taken note of Camera’s qualities, both supporting
and promoting them.
And what of the “Krautrock Guerilla” epithet? Well, Camera like nothing
better than playing spontaneous concerts in public spaces, without
permission of course (to be watched on YouTube et al.). Seeing
Camera live for the first time occurs less commonly in a concert hall
than in an unexpected, surprising location: an underground station in
the middle of the night, an underpass or even public toilets. The
threesome set up their minimalist drum kit (snare, floor tom, cymbals
and headless tambourine) and two amplifiers, plug in their guitars and
synthesizer and off they go. Much to the delight of the audience. Less
so in the case of guardians of the law...
Another of Camera’s specialities is to sneak their way into highly official
after show parties (German Film Prize, Echo Awards etc.), arrange their
portable equipment in a matter of minutes and play for as long as it
takes for the security to realize they are not part of the official
programme. They actually performed in the gentlemen’s toilets at this
year’s Echo Awards. This is their way of unleashing themselves on an
unprejudiced, unprepared audience, meeting with an enthusiastic
response.
Anyway, here they are with their debut release. At first, the three
musicians were not the slightest bit interested in recording, they just
wanted to play, play, play. Yet, as time passed, form and structure
increasingly appeared in their improvisations, with the potential to be
crafted into individual tracks. With a little suasion, they were ready.
The next surprise in store was how successfully Camera transferred
their spontaneity to the studio. Never really sounding constructed or
orchestrated, these tracks could just as easily have been recorded on
the street – apart from the audio quality, of course. This is partially due
to the fact that the album was recorded "live" in the studio.
Camera’s musical spectrum ranges from driving motorik rock to serene,
epically flowing tracks by way of foreboding soundscape ridges. In
other words: it can be right in your face or elsewhere in interstellar
spheres, where time and space have no meaning; cosmic/kosmische
music! One can clearly hear the influence of their paragons, NEU!,
Harmonia, Cluster and La Düsseldorf.
Camera have taken Krautrock onto the street, straight to the people,
making the magical achievements of German musical pioneers
accessible to a wider listenership with their guerilla tactics. We cannot
thank them enough for that. And now, at last, you can enjoy Camera in
your own home.
